Most of the walk will be across the dunes, with the return journey taking us along the beach back to Essaouira.
The ramble is not arduous, the slopes gentle, for most of the walk we will be on a path or a track…which gradually turns to sand and beach.
Vegetation was re-introduced to the dunes after massive de-forestation occurred at the end of the 18th century. On the walk you will be able to observe the different steps taken to restock the area mainly with red juniper.
A forester will guide and explain to you the techniques used in the re-planting of the dunes of Essaouira, the historic reasons and need for re-afforestation, and the problems encountered by those involved in stabilising the vegetation on dunes surrounding an expanding town.
On this ramble you will also encounter the wide variety of flora and fauna to be found in this its natural habitat.
